Wöber's Own Goal Proves Decisive

France got their Euro 2024 campaign off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over Austria in Group D on Saturday. The only goal of the game came in the 35th minute when Maximilian Wöber turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Kylian Mbappé.

Austria Offered Stern Resistance

Despite the scoreline, Austria gave France a stern test and will feel hard done by not to have come away with at least a point. Christoph Baumgartner came close to opening the scoring in the first half, but his shot was well saved by Hugo Lloris. Marcel Sabitzer also had a good chance in the second half, but he could only fire straight at Lloris.

France, meanwhile, struggled to create clear-cut chances and were often forced to rely on individual moments of brilliance from Mbappé. The Paris Saint-Germain forward was a constant threat to the Austrian defence and came close to scoring on several occasions.

France Top Group D

The victory moves France top of Group D, with Austria in second place. Denmark and Croatia, who drew 1-1 earlier in the day, are the other teams in the group.
