Miley Cyrus Accused of Copying Bruno Mars With 'Flowers,' Sued for Fourth Time Over Copyright Infringement

Allegations of Copyright Infringement Against Miley Cyrus

Pop star Miley Cyrus has once again found herself facing allegations of copyright infringement, after being sued for the fourth time over the use of another artist's work in her music. This time, the lawsuit has been filed by singer-songwriter Bruno Mars, who claims that Cyrus's hit song "Flowers" bears significant similarities to his own song "Uptown Funk." The suit alleges that Cyrus and her team copied the melody, chord progression, and lyrical structure of "Uptown Funk" without permission.

The lawsuit, which was filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California, seeks damages and an injunction against further use of the infringing material. This is not the first time Cyrus has been accused of copyright infringement. In 2013, she was sued by rapper Kendrick Lamar for allegedly using his song "Alright" in her song "We Can't Stop." In 2019, she was sued by Led Zeppelin for allegedly using the guitar riff from their song "Kashmir" in her song "Malibu." And in 2020, she was sued by Sean Carter (Jay-Z) for allegedly using his lyrics in her song "Midnight Sky."

Bruno Mars's Allegations Against Cyrus

In the lawsuit, Mars and his co-writers allege that Cyrus and her team had access to "Uptown Funk" prior to the release of "Flowers." They claim that Cyrus's song shares a "strikingly similar" melody, chord progression, and lyrical structure to "Uptown Funk." The suit also alleges that Cyrus's song is "substantially similar" to "Uptown Funk" in terms of its overall mood, rhythm, and style.

Mars's attorney, Richard Busch, said in a statement that "The similarities between these two songs are simply too striking to be a coincidence." He added that "We believe that Miley Cyrus and her team intentionally copied 'Uptown Funk' without permission or credit, and we intend to hold them accountable for their actions."

Cyrus's History of Copyright Infringement Allegations

This is not the first time Cyrus has been accused of copyright infringement. In 2013, she was sued by rapper Kendrick Lamar for allegedly using his song "Alright" in her song "We Can't Stop." The lawsuit was eventually settled out of court. In 2019, she was sued by Led Zeppelin for allegedly using the guitar riff from their song "Kashmir" in her song "Malibu." The lawsuit was also settled out of court.

In 2020, Cyrus was sued by Sean Carter (Jay-Z) for allegedly using his lyrics in her song "Midnight Sky." The lawsuit is still pending. If Cyrus is found liable for copyright infringement in the Bruno Mars case, she could face significant financial penalties and damage to her reputation.
